International Employment

The Career Center is here for you!

Tech’s Career Center is here to support every student – including members of our vibrant international community. Whether you’re exploring career paths, preparing for interviews, or seeking on and off-campus jobs, we have resources designed with you in mind. If you need help with matters other than employment or career development, visit International Services.

As an international student, you bring a unique and valuable global perspective that many U.S. employers truly appreciate. Your experiences and background enrich every workplace. However, the customary way of communicating your qualifications may differ significantly from how U.S. employers expect to learn about your qualifications. This does not mean that your way is wrong. It simply means that you need to adapt to meet U.S. employers’ expectations. That’s where the Career Center can help. The Career Center wants to assist you in adjusting to U.S. employers’ expectations during the hiring process. Please make an appointment with a career coach through Handshake when building a resume, writing a cover letter, and preparing for an interview.

During your first academic year in the U.S., you can only work on campus. While school is in session, you can work up to 20 hours per week. During official school breaks, you’re allowed to work over 20 hours per week. To remain eligible to work, you must maintain your F-1 visa status and be in good academic standing. You’ll also need a Social Security Number (SSN). Indiana Tech’s International Services team can provide you with a support letter to help you apply for an SSN.

Following your first year as a student in the U.S., you can take advantage of other employment opportunities through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). These employment options allow you to gain valuable work experience in the U.S. during and after completing your degree. Career coaches are ready to help you navigate these pathways and connect you with employers who value global talent.

Please take full advantage of in-person and virtual one-on-one coaching for your specific needs such as resumes, cover letters, job search strategy, and interview preparation.  Make time to participate in career fairs, get practice through mock interviews, and learn about networking. Make an appointment on Handshake and check out the Career Center’s group on Warriors Connect for events.
